Online Calculus Tutoring for High-Achieving Students
For strong math students whose calculus test grades no longer match their record.
Your student has always done well in math. Calculus is the first course where that stopped being true. Homework makes sense, but quiz and test grades are coming back as a B, a B−, sometimes a C, and that grade goes on the transcript colleges will read. The gap is frustrating. It is also diagnosable.
I offer online calculus tutoring, 1:1 on Zoom, for AP Calculus AB and BC, college calculus through Calculus III, and precalculus.
Why strong math students struggle in calculus
In my experience, the students who struggle in calculus are rarely weak at math. They got this far by learning a process for each kind of problem and applying it reliably. Calculus breaks that approach in three ways:
- There are too many processes to memorize. Calculus asks students to know and do far more than earlier courses, and memorizing a separate procedure for each problem type stops working.
- Old algebra gaps show up. Calculus assumes students can factor, work with exponents and exponentials, and manipulate expressions without thinking about it. A skill that was never fully mastered in Algebra 2 or precalculus surfaces as a lost point on a calculus test.
- The math underneath is new. What does a derivative actually mean? Why does the slope of a tangent line matter? What are we describing when we talk about rates of change? Students who can run the procedure but can't answer those questions get stuck the moment a test problem looks unfamiliar.
None of these is a lack of ability. They are gaps in foundation and understanding, and both can be fixed.
How I work: build the foundation, then the understanding
We start with your student's own questions. Early sessions work through the specific problems they are stuck on. That shows quickly whether the gap is an old algebra skill, a misunderstanding of what a derivative means, or something else.
We fix the foundation first. If factoring or exponentials are costing points, we repair them directly, because every later topic depends on them.
We build understanding under the procedures. Your student learns what the derivative and the integral mean, so a new problem is something to reason through rather than a procedure to recall.
We tune how your student studies. At this level, students who studied well enough in earlier math often need a more efficient way to prepare. I work with each student on how to study for calculus so the work turns into test performance. Progress is kept in a shared tracker, so you can see it too.
A sample tracker (illustrative entries, not a real student). Each lost point becomes a specific rule, and the rules show what to fix next.
One first-year college student came to me after his first calculus test came back lower than he expected. The course was moving fast, and he was unsure which derivative rule to use and how to set up related rates. We worked from his own questions, and he finished the course with an A.
What I cover
- AP Calculus AB and BC
- College calculus: Calculus I, II and III
- Precalculus, including the algebra and trigonometry calculus depends on
Within those courses: limits, derivatives and the chain rule, related rates and optimization, integrals and the Fundamental Theorem, and series (BC and Calculus II).
Who you'll work with
I'm Kevin Doty, and I work with your student myself, every session, start to finish. I don't hand families off to a team of tutors.
I've been tutoring for 18 years: more than 9,000 hours of 1:1 sessions since 2008, with more than 600 families. I studied aerospace engineering at Purdue, earned an MSEd from Mercy College and an MDiv from Princeton Theological Seminary, and hold a New York teaching license in physics and general science.
What I commit to
- You'll know where things stand. Your student's work lives in a shared tracker, and you'll get regular written updates.
- An honest read on the first call. The Parent Fit Call is free. If I don't think I'm the right fit, I'll tell you plainly.
- Room to stay involved. I keep my roster small on purpose.
What families say
"I began working with Kevin when I was struggling in my Calculus class. … his probing tutoring sessions pushed me to truly understand the material I was learning. The greatest tool I received from tutoring with Kevin though was the ability to think like a mathematician, and to problem solve in Calculus language."
— Blake Morgan, student
"Kevin was excellent in helping our son with AP Calc. With his support, our son was able to hit his goal for the class and pass the AP Exam with a good margin. I would highly recommend Kevin."
— David Morgan, parent
How working together works
- Book a free 20-minute Parent Fit Call. After you pick a time, you'll answer a few questions about your student: grade, current course, recent quiz and test grades, upcoming tests, and how willing they are to do weekly work.
- Talk it through. On the call we cover where the gap is coming from and what the work will realistically take.
- Get a plan built around the course calendar. If we move forward, I map out the session schedule (typically 1:1 on Zoom, more often before a big test) and how I'll keep you updated.
- Run the plan and adjust. Your student and I meet, do the work, and adjust based on real quiz and test results.
Who this is for, and who it isn't
This is for strong math students whose calculus grades have slipped, who are willing to do focused work between sessions, and whose families want the underlying problem fixed, not just tonight's homework done.
This is not for:
- Doing a student's homework or graded work for them
- Students who refuse to do any work between sessions
- Families looking for the lowest-cost hourly tutor
Questions parents ask
Which courses do you cover?
AP Calculus AB and BC, college Calculus I through III, and precalculus.
My student understands it in class but does badly on tests. Is that common?
Very. In my experience it usually means they can follow a worked example but haven't yet built the understanding or the study habits that hold up on a test. That is the gap I work on.
Can you help in the middle of a semester?
Yes. Most students start once a quiz or test grade raises a concern. We begin with the current unit and repair older gaps as they show up.
How often do we meet?
Most students meet once a week during the course, with an extra session in the week before a unit test or final. We set the schedule on the Parent Fit Call.
Does calculus tutoring work online?
Every session is 1:1 on Zoom. We work problems live on a shared screen, and your student keeps their notes and tracker afterward.
What does it cost?
This is a premium, low-volume service. We cover the investment on the call, once I understand your student's course, goals and timeline.
Ready to talk it through?
If your student's calculus grades don't match what you know they can do, let's find out why. The Parent Fit Call is free and takes 20 minutes.
